In the cold of the Zambian winter months, we look back on the past period and realize just how much has actually happened. There are moments when we see God’s faithfulness in small things, but also moments when we are challenged to have renewed faith for the future.

This newsletter is about both.

It is about our mission work, about developments regarding our Farm and our activities, and about the people we are privileged to reach daily, who are helped and encouraged. But it is also about a challenge that is growing ever larger: the financial foundation of our work is under pressure..

A mission that goes beyond words

Missionary work is often difficult to measure in numbers and not immediately visible. Buildings are visible. Projects are visible. Physical investments are visible. But the greatest impact of our work lies in people, and that is not immediately visible, 

Every encounter, every conversation, every visit, every moment of prayer and encouragement contributes to change that is not always immediately visible, but that permanently influences lives.

Over the years, I have dedicated myself to supporting, guiding, and creating opportunities for women in Africa and Zambia. And I still do! Sometimes this happens through practical help. Sometimes through entrepreneurial initiatives. Sometimes through training and education. Sometimes simply by being present when no one else needs it, and most importantly, by allowing them to show their self-worth and identity.

Mobuley has done this in Zambia, through many projects he has been and still is involved with. Also through OM in Africa, where he provides support for local innovation by volunteers within Operation Mobilisation. This model helps build self-sustaining initiatives that can make individual OM workers self-sufficient and strengthen the local economy.

Missionary work……….Sometimes very tangible and sometimes very invisible.

Wedding on the Farm

Last July 4th, a sister of Mobuley got married. The wedding was on our farm; it was quite a hustle and bustle, because in this culture, everyone travels to the wedding a few days in advance, so we had about 20 extra people on our farm! It was a chaotic preparation time and day, just like all weddings here in Zambia are. Unfortunately, the tailor in Lusaka made a mess of her wedding dress and her dress for the party, which meant I had to work on the wedding dress by hand for two days and also had to adjust the dress for the party…. In addition, I did the decoration. Typical Zambian style. Unfortunately, the photographer wasn’t the best and didn’t take any (nice) photos of the decoration and location……

Twalumbu Farm

We are not sitting still on our farm, or rather, our employees are not sitting still. Most aspects are still running as usual: the hammer mill, the shop, the (local) chickens, the maize, the vegetables, and the bananas. We continue trying to find honest customers (no corruption) so that we can make a profit.

We are currently trying to get the farm ready again with an adequate system to monitor our water consumption of 28,000 liters per day for watering our newly planted vegetables, coffee plants, and bananas, in addition to the fact that people in our community also need the necessary water.

Twalumbu Real Estate

Mobuley has recently become a certified real estate agent, and we hope he can assist clients with the purchase and sale of property. It takes time before actual commissions are earned, and this is because the market operates differently than in the Netherlands. Let’s put it this way: in this field too, corruption is everywhere, along with ‘illilgal’ money and many illegal agents. And one thing we are always clear about is that we do not participate in illigal practices. We want to do business honestly, which is not easy here in Zambia, but we do our best to do things differently!

Twalumbu Cottage

On our farm, we have been able to transform a small building into a Bed & Breakfast! Our cottage is a comfortable, self-catering accommodation on our farm in Twapia, Ndola. Here, guests can enjoy a quiet, safe environment with private amenities and the space to experience life on a working farm. The income from the cottage contributes to maintain our business and buildings, the salaries of our employees, and hopefully it will one day help us build a sustainable source of income for our farm.

Although full self-sufficiency has not yet been achieved, Twalumbu Real Estate and Twalumbu Cottage remain an important part of that vision.

Twalumbu Missions Foundation

We have started the work with the children! During the last school break in April, a large group of children from groups 2 through 6 were able to receive four weeks of extra schooling, which has really made a difference! Not yet significant enough to allow us to send extra children to school, as that requires additional funds, but it did help them get that extra push and perform better so they can move on to the next group at the end of the year. More on the ins and outs of this mission and what is needed in a future newsletter!

The reality behind the numbers

Thanks to your support, we continue serving women, families, and children in Twapia through Operation Mobilization, Women of Impact Africa, and other community initiatives. While Twalumbu Farm now supports nine families, it cannot yet fully sustain our family and our work.

The loss of several donors and the low euro exchange rate have created a monthly shortfall of about €400.

This affects school fees, medical expenses, work permit renewals, and ministry travel. In addition, our vehicle from 1997 is becoming increasingly unreliable, and the repair costs are simply too much.
