Uit het zand getrokken

“Ik heb je bij je naam geroepen, je bent van mij….. Want ik, de HEER, ben je God, de Heilige van Israël, je redder!”Jesaja 43:1b-3a

Het eerste gedeelte van deze verzen wordt in Nederland vaak gebruikt bij de doop van baby’s, kinderen en volwassenen en het tweede gedeelte als bemoediging dat God er zal zijn in moeilijke situaties, dat Hij je redt. Zou u vers 2 ook willen lezen in uw Bijbel en daarna tegen uzelf zeggen; “Word je bedekt door de aarde – het zal je niet opslokken”.

Ik ben zichtbaar geraakt deze dagen. Waarom? Eén van de vrouwen die deelnam aan onze Vrouwen Discipelschap Training in West-Afrika stuurde een video naar ons met daarin het hartverscheurende tafereel van een pasgeboren baby half begraven in het zand. Beide beentjes en één armpje staken er nog uit en het half bedekte gezichtje hapte zichtbaar naar adem. De navelstreng zat er nog aan…… Mijn hart brak! Een onschuldig kind, ongewenst! Wat de reden voor de moeder is geweest dit te doen is niet bekend, het kan van alles zijn; armoede, verkrachting, angst paniek, noem maar op. Gelukkig is de baby uit het zand getrokken, ligt in het ziekenhuis en maakt het naar omstandigheden goed.

De volgende dag kreeg ik een foto vanuit Nederland met het vreugdevolle bericht van iemand die een prachtig kleinkind had gekregen, alles gezond en wel en gehuld in alle mooie moderne kleertjes, muts en dekentjes die er tegenwoordig te krijgen zijn. Goed ingepakt en vol liefde en warmte neergelegd in de wieg. Wat een contrast! Tegen beide kinderen zegt God; Ik weet wie je bent, je bent van mij!

Begrijpt u het nog? Het voelt soms zo oneerlijk hier in Afrika. Zoveel leed en ellende, zoveel jonge meiden zwanger, zoveel onkunde, zoveel abortussen. Van alle jonge meiden die eindigen in de mortuaria in Zambia is het grootste gedeelte overleden door een door hen zelf uitgevoerde abortus. Allemaal kinderen en jonge meiden die God kent, die Hij bij naam roept en voor wie Hij een redder wil zijn. Want Hij is God, de Heilige van Israël. En dit is juist waarom ik mijn werk doe! Proberen zoveel mogelijk vrouwen te bereiken en te bemoedigen dat ze van waarde zijn en dat er een God is die voor ze zorgt! Bid u mee voor de moeders en hun kinderen?

Pulled out of the sand

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine…….For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior!” Isaiah 43:1b-3a

The first part of these verses is often used in the Netherlands at the baptism of babies, children and adults and the second part as an encouragement that God will be there in difficult situations, that He will save you. Would you also like to read verse 2 in your Bible and then say to yourself; “When you will be covered by the earth – it will not swallow you up”.

I’m visibly touched these days. Why? One of the women who attended our Women’s Discipleship Training in West Africa sent us a video showing the heart-breaking scene of a new born baby half buried in the sand. Both legs and one arm were still sticking out and the half-covered face visibly gasped. The umbilical cord was still attached…… My heart broke! An innocent child, unwanted! What the reason was for the mother to do this is not known, it could be anything; poverty, rape, fear, panic, you name it. Fortunately, the baby has been pulled out of the sand, is in the hospital and is doing well given the circumstances.

The next day I received a photo from the Netherlands with the joyful message of someone who had given birth to a beautiful grandchild, all healthy and well and dressed in all the beautiful modern clothes, head-socks and blankets available today. Well packed and full of love and warmth placed in the cradle. What a contrast! God says to both children; I know who you are, you are mine!

Do you still understand? It sometimes feels so unfair here in Africa. So much suffering and misery, so many young girls pregnant, so much ignorance, so many abortions. Of all the young girls who end up in the mortuaries in Zambia, the majority have died from an abortion they performed themselves. All children and young girls whom God knows, whom He calls by name and for whom He wants to be a Savior. For He is God, the Holy One of Israel. And this is exactly why I do my job! Trying to reach as many women as possible and encourage them that they are of value and that there is a God who cares for them! Will you join us in praying for the mothers and their children?
