Vaak hebben we niet al teveel geduld. Toch? Ik weet bijna zeker dat u zich hierin zult herkennen. Ook onze maatschappij werkt niet echt mee. Alles moet snel en liever gisteren dan vandaag. Ergens voor wachten maakt ons ongeduldig en soms een ‘tikkeltje’ chagrijnig. Daarnaast vinden we dat instanties slecht meewerken. Het kan toch beter en sneller? We hebben het druk dus moet alles gedaan worden in de 24 uur die in een dag zitten. Morgen? Nee, ik wil graag dat het vandaag geregeld wordt!

Nou, welkom in Afrika! Een continent waar ruim de tijd genomen wordt voor alles wat er geregeld moet worden. Lukt het vandaag niet, dan kom je toch gewoon morgen terug. Een formulier ophalen? Nee mevrouw, dat moet ’s ochtends tussen 9:00 en 11:00 uur ‘Ja maar…’ Geen reactie, geen discussie.

Nadat ik eerst een ‘gezondheidstest’ had gedaan (lees: een simpele ogentest en vier uur wachten in het ziekenhuis) kon ik mijn Zambiaanse rijbewijs gaan regelen. Veel formulieren invullen, laten stempelen, laten fiatteren door de manager en betalingen doen bij drie verschillende loketten. En tussendoor? Heel, heel veel wachten… Het duurde al met al een hele dag, maar dan heb je ook wat!

Galaten 5:22-23 laat ons deze tekst zien; ‘Maar de vrucht van de Geest is liefde, vreugde en vrede, geduld, vriendelijkheid en goedheid, geloof, zachtmoedigheid en zelfbeheersing.

Er is geen wet die daar iets tegen heeft.’ Wat een rake tekst, die een ieder van ons ter harte zou moeten nemen. Als we God echt de ruimte geven om in onze levens te werken, dan geeft Hij ons door de Heilige Geest ook de uitwerking van de Vrucht. Deze Vrucht is niet alleen het hebben van liefde, vriendelijkheid en/of goedheid. Nee, de vrucht van de Geest omvat alle negen eigenschappen. Het een kan niet zonder het ander.

Sinds ik God de gehele controle over mijn leven heb gegeven konden deze eigenschappen zich eindelijk meer ontwikkelen. Wat heeft me dat al veel opgeleverd! Een leven vol rust en geduld, in Nederland, maar ook zeker hier in Zambia, waar je alle geduld nodig hebt. In de bureaucratie, maar ook vanwege de totaal andere cultuur! De Vrucht van de Geest maakt het leven – waar ook ter wereld – een stuk makkelijker.

Patience

Often we are not too patient. Right? I’m almost certain that you will recognize yourself in this. Our society does not really cooperate either. Everything has to be fast and rather things have to happen yesterday instead of today. Waiting for something makes us impatient and sometimes a “bit” grumpy. In addition, we believe that authorities do not cooperate well either. They can do better and faster isn’t is? We are so busy that everything has to be done within the 24 hours a day gives us. Tomorrow? No, I want it to be arranged today!

Well, welcome to Africa! A continent where plenty of time is taken for everything that needs to be organized. If it doesn’t work today, you will just have to come back tomorrow. Collect a form? No, ma’am, you collect this form between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. “Yes but …” No response, no discussion.

After I’d done a “health test” (read: a simple eye test and four hours of waiting in the hospital) I was able to arrange my Zambian driver’s license. Fill in many forms, have them stamped, have the manager to sign them off and make payments at three different counters. And in between? Yes, right a lot of waiting … All in all it took a whole day, but at least I can now say I have got a Zambian drivers license!

Galatians 5: 22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Against such things there is no law. “What a striking Word from the Bible that each of us should take at heart. If we really give God space to work in our lives, He also gives us the effects of this Fruit through the Holy Spirit. This Fruit is not just having love, kindness and / or goodness. No, the Fruit of the Spirit contains all nine characteristics. One cannot do without the other.

Since I let God have complete control over my life, these characteristics could finally develop. This has already brought me so much! A life full of peace and patience, in the Netherlands, but certainly here in Zambia, where you need all the patience you can get. In bureaucracy, but also because of the totally different culture! The Fruit of the Spirit makes life – wherever in the world – a lot easier.
