Lieve Anni,

Als ik deze brief schrijf zit ik alweer meer dan een jaar bij Operatie Mobilisatie in Zambia, en is het alweer acht jaar geleden dat God mijn hart heeft veranderd. Ik kreeg het verlangen om de zending in te gaan. Daarvoor moest ik mijn leven in Nederland opgeven. Dat ik met mijn ervaring in naaien, patroontekenen en textielproductie ook iets goeds kon doen, had ik nooit durven dromen. Op een bijzondere manier kwamen wij elkaar tegen. Ik mocht langskomen op het trainingscentrum in Benin, waar jij als zendelinge jonge meiden naaien, breien en patroontekenen leerde. Bij jou proefde ik aan het werken in de zending.

Dat was mijn eerste ervaring in Afrika, en wat voor één! Met buikpijn begon ik aan mijn missie, maar uiteindelijk wist ik dat Afrika een plek is waar ik me thuis zou kunnen voelen. Wat heb je me veel verteld en laten zien: over de cultuur en over een (spirituele) wereld waar wij in het Westen geen weet van hebben. Samen met God heb je me voorbereid op mijn taak. En ook al ben je alweer een tijdje terug in Nederland, nog steeds kan ik bij je terecht. We praten, lachen, huilen, maar bidden samen ook veel.

Nu ik hier in Zambia zit, zijn het echt wel die acht jaar aan verhalen en adviezen die me helpen om een weg te vinden in dit land. Er komt veel op mijn pad, en er veel situaties waarin het makkelijk is om vanuit mijn eigen westers perspectief te reageren. Jouw adviezen komen nu goed van pas. Ze laten me nog steeds duidelijk zien dat het de Heer is van wie we alles mogen verwachten!

“Want ik ben de HEER, je God, ik neem je bij je rechterhand en zeg je: Wees niet bang, ik zal je helpen”. Jesaja 41:13

As I write this letter, I have been serving with Operation Mobilization in Zambia for over a year, and it has been eight years since God changed my heart. I felt a desire to go into a mission. To be able to do that I had to give up my life in the Netherlands. I never dreamed that I could do something good with my experience in sewing, pattern drawing and textile production. You and me, we met each other in a special way. I was allowed to visit the training center in Benin, where you as a missionary were teaching young girls how to sew, knit and do the pattern drawing. With you I had a taste of how it was to work on the mission field.

That was my first experience in Africa, and what a great one! I started my mission with a stomach ache, but eventually I knew that Africa is a place where I could feel at home. How much you told me and showed to me: about the culture and about a (spiritual) dimension where people in the West have no knowledge of. It was you and God who prepared me for my task. And even though you have been back in the Netherlands for a while, I can still contact you. We talk, laugh, cry, but we also pray a lot together.

Now that I am here in Zambia, it is really those eight years of stories and advice that help me to find my way in this country. A lot comes my way, and there are many situations where it is easy to respond from my own Western perspective. Your advice comes in handy. It still shows me clearly that we can and have to expect everything from the Lord!
