“De HEER zei tegen Abram: ‘Trek weg uit je land, verlaat je familie, verlaat ook je naaste verwanten, en ga naar het land dat ik je zal wijzen.” Genesis 12:1

De laatste tijd komt dit vers steeds bij mij naar boven. In 2019 was het voor mij duidelijk dat God mij in Zambia wilde hebben. Maar dat zou voor tijdelijk zijn, toch? Een paar jaar werken als zendeling en dan weer terug naar Nederland. Hoe anders is het gelopen. Ik leerde in Zambia mijn man kennen en samen hebben we besloten dat onze toekomst daar ligt. Ik blijf. Gods wegen zijn ondoorgrondelijk. Het vers uit de Bijbel is nu, drie jaar verder, werkelijkheid. ‘Trek uit Nederland, verlaat je familie, vrienden en ga naar Zambia, het land dat Ik je heb gewezen’. Dit is het proces waar ik in terecht kwam tijdens ons recente bezoek aan Nederland.

Naast een mooi tweede huwelijksfeest met familie en vrienden uit Nederland was het vooral veel drukte en emotie om door alle spullen heen te gaan die ik nog steeds in Nederland had. Voordat ik wegging had ik al wel een grove selectie gemaakt, maar om álles weg te doen? Dat was in 2019 niet nodig. Hoe anders is dat nu! Als je zo’n bewaartype bent als ik, dan is het geen makkelijke klus. Ik had meer spullen dan ik nodig had. De indeling van onze dag was dan ook vaak: spullen selecteren om mee te nemen, spullen weggeven, naar de kringloop, oud papier en grijze container.

Hoe deed Abraham dat, toen God zei dat hij op reis moest gaan? Had hij veel spullen? Oude schoolspullen? Verzamelde hij veel? En hoe deed zijn vrouw Sara dat? De Bijbel schrijft er niet over. De Bijbel geeft wel aan dat de bagage op reis meestal bestond uit voedsel. Dat lijkt me een goed plan voor die tijd. Nu hoef ik geen eten mee te nemen, want de plek waar ik naar toe ga heeft een klein groentetuintje met heerlijke verse groenten. Wat hebben we uiteindelijk nodig in ons leven? Juist, vertrouwen in God. Hoe minder we hebben, hoe meer God ons kan geven. De opdracht die God mij gaf in 2012 is een rode draad in mijn leven, maar wordt nu wel écht werkelijkheid; ‘Geef alles maar op en dan maak ik je rijk.’ Hoeveel durft u op te geven in uw leven?

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” Genesis 12:1

Lately, this verse keeps coming to my mind. In 2019 it was clear to me that God wanted me in Zambia. But that would be temporary, right? Working as a missionary for a few years and then back to the Netherlands. How different it turned out. I met my husband in Zambia and together we decided that our future lies there. I will stay. God works in mysterious ways. The verse from the Bible is now, three years later, reality. “Get out of the Netherlands, leave your family, friends and go to Zambia, the country I showed you.” This is the process I got into during our recent visit to the Netherlands.

In addition to a beautiful second wedding party with family and friends from the Netherlands, it was especially busy and emotional to go through all the stuff that I still had in the Netherlands. Before I left I had already made a rough selection, but to get rid of everything? That was not necessary in 2019. How different that is now! If you’re a keeper like me, it’s not an easy job. I had more stuff than I needed. The course of the day was mostly selecting things to take with us, giving things away, taking stuff to the second-hand shop, old administration to the paper waste and the remains could go the normal garbage.

How did Abraham do it when God told him to go on a journey? Did he have a lot of stuff? Stuff from his school? Did he collect a lot? And how did his wife Sarah do that? The Bible does not write about it. The Bible does indicate that the luggage when traveling usually consisted of food. That seems like a good plan for the time. Me, I don’t have to bring food with me, because the place I’m going to has a small vegetable garden with delicious fresh vegetables. What do we ultimately need in our lives? That’s right, trust in God. The less we have, the more God can give us. The assignment that God gave me in 2012 is a common thread in my life, but it is now really becoming reality; “Give up everything and I will make you rich.” How much are you willing to give up in your life?
